Dr Karamat Iqbal In Conversation: with Canon Dr Andrew Smith
Wednesday 16th June at 7 pm to 8 pm.
In his book ‘Vibrant Christianity in Multi-faith Britain’ Andrew reminds us that society is increasingly multi-faith and asks us to consider our role in that. He challenges us to think what it means to see people of different faiths as friends and how should we relate to them as people of faith. We want to talk to them about our faith. Sure! But are we willing to listen to them when they want to talk about their faith? Could they teach us something?
Elsewhere he reminds us that encountering Muslims is now normal for Christians. Should we worry about such encounters or welcome the opportunity? Can we imagine a parable of the Good Muslim?
This conversation is an opportunity for Andrew to offer some pointers on how we should live as Christians in such a context and how to confidently express our faith.
Andrew Smith is Director of Interfaith Relations for the Bishop of Birmingham. He was instrumental in founding The Feast, a youth work charity bringing together young people of different faiths and cultures. He wrote the Ethical Guidelines for Witness, for the National Christian Muslim Forum and has contributed to several books and publications on ministry amongst people of different faiths.
Karamat Iqbal is of Pakistani Muslim background. Now a follower of Christ for the past 25 years. He worships at Riverside Church in Birmingham. His current focus is researching and writing about the British Pakistani community.
