Dr Karamat Iqbal In Conversation: with Mohammed Ajeeb CBE - a life in service to the community
Monday 20th September at 7 pm to 8.30 pm.
His life began in a simple Kashmiri village, but he went on to achieve unexpected heights and become a role model for many. Everyone knows him as the first Asian and Muslim Lord Mayor in the UK but there are many other firsts in the life of this true pioneer from the British Pakistani Kashmiri community.
From the early days he has had a commitment to justice and a spirit of adventure. Never afraid to speak truth to power, challenge discrimination in the wider community and a willingness to question culture and tradition within his own community.
His story provides us a glimpse into pre-Partition Mirpur (Chatro in Dadyal), the early days of Pakistan (Karachi) and then the post-war migration story into England (Nottingham, Bradford) where he has been for more than 60 years.
We draw out the lessons from his experience that may help us in our present and the days ahead.
Karamat Iqbal was born in a village near Dadyal. Age 12, he was sent to England with relatives. He learnt to stand on his own feet and make the best of the Land of Opportunity. He has been an education and equality practitioner throughout his life. His recent research publications have included: ‘Dear Birmingham’ (on Pakistani exclusion), ‘A biography of the word Paki’ and ‘British Pakistani boys, education and the role of religion’. He works for the Mahabba Network, promoting understanding amongst Christians of their Muslim neighbours.
